In the early days, HP guys came up with the “HP ways”, based on which the HP corporate objectives are derived. One of the objectives is Profitability – (the HP guys) … recognize that profit is the best single measure of our contribution to society … We should attempt to achieve the maximum possible profit consistent with our other objectives.
Accordingly, the other objectives are concerned about customers, employees, citizenship etc.
As far as I know, this Profitability objective was finalized after the HP founders have seriously debated between profitability and contribution to society.
At of this moment in the century, it seems that quite a few of us fellow human beings have forgotten why we strive for profitability.
